In honor of Women's History Month, we're excited to celebrate and those who play a vital role in the success of Old World Industries. We heard from a few women employees who shared what this month means to them.
International Women’s Day is important to me because it allows us a moment of reflection - we have come a long way with DE&I and Equality, but the journey is far from over. As the Director of Continuous Improvement at OWI, I look for diversity when forming and building efficient teams. Men, Women, and Gender-neutral team members, all add tremendous value. I believe it is the sum of those differences that leads to the best outcomes. Teams who can recognize and embrace the equity each person brings to the table is fundamental.
I challenge myself regularly, “How am I creating an inclusive world, where our equity (differences) are not only accepted but celebrated!" Six years ago, I spearheaded a project to raise funds and build an inclusive playground for families with disabilities in Aurora, IL, called the Gateway to Laughter. Each piece of equipment was engineered so someone fully functioning could play alongside someone that wasn’t. I am dedicated to embracing equity both personally and professionally; previously running a Women’s Employee Resource Group, creating mentorship programs, being both a mentor and a mentee, joining several groups of woman professionals, actively volunteering in my community (Women’s Build-Habitat for Humanity, Ignite-homeless youth, FMSC), and more.
Dr. Sandra Gill, former Dean of the College of Business at Benedictine University lead with inquiry. She took the time, to ask questions, infer other perspectives, and inspire you to become more than you could imagine. Her “what if” approach was simple, honest, and without boundaries. She was vulnerable to share her own lessons learned, and “give back” to the next generation of future leaders.
Pause and reach back to help the next woman professional. Make introductions and help build their network. Listen to their career aspirations, inspire growth in depth and width, and help them succeed.
About five years ago I went back to school for my MBA. I worked full time, raised a family, and helped with my husband’s two companies. I was committed and set my goals high. I was able to graduate with a 4.0 GPA.
Evolution is a constant for me. I think Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate Women accomplishments, allies, and everyone on the progress and unity that is being created.
”If you don’t invest in yourself, why should anyone else?” – Early in my career, a mentor said these words to me. He inspired my never-ending journey of continual learning. My personal and career aspirations will always contain a concentration on growth and development. I try to lead by example and inspire others to do the same.
