NHRA: Gerber Collision and Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK Performance- Joliet
Monday, May 20, 2024: John Force advanced Sunday afternoon to his 268th final round in Funny Car at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by PEAK Performance in Joliet, Illinois, but couldn’t hold off Matt Hagan who took the win in Funny Car.
Starting race day from the number four spot in Funny Car, Force defeated Buddy Hull in the first round of Sunday’s eliminations, then followed up with the quarterfinals win over Alexis DeJoria. In the semifinals, Force defeated Daniel Wilkerson, who eliminated Force’s teammate, Austin Prock in the quarterfinals, setting up the matchup with Hagan. Even with Sunday’s final-round loss, Force moved up to third place in the Funny Car standings.
Force’s teammate Austin Prock started race day from the number one position in Funny Car, defeating Jack Wyatt in the opening round. In the second round, Prock lost a close race to Daniel Wilkerson, ending Prock’s hope for his second win of the season. Leaving Joliet, the combination of Prock’s early loss and Hagan’s win dropped Austin to the number two spot in the Funny Car point standings.
John Force Racing’s Top Fuel driver, Brittany Force, missed the 16-car cut off in qualifying and did not compete Sunday, having failed to qualify for the first time in 190 straight national events, dating back to 2014. Even so, Brittany remains 10th in the Top Fuel point standings.
The NHRA teams will have Memorial Day weekend off and will resume with the New England Nationals in Epping, NH, May 31st-June 2nd.
